What it is for and what it is not
Use it for
- Tyre browning and blooming
- Removing old tyre dressing and contamination
- Prepping rubber before a dressing or tyre sealant
- Road grime and brake dust on rubber and plastic
- Wheel wells and arch liners
- Rubber and plastic floor mats
- Engine bay and undercarriage degreasing
- General wheel cleaning
Not the right product for
- Bonded iron and brake dust in paint, use an iron remover
- Baked on wheel contamination, use a dedicated wheel cleaner
- Raw uncoated aluminium wheels or diamond cut faces
- Leather and vinyl interior trim
- Dressing tyres, this strips, it does not dress
- Working in direct sun on a hot tyre
Why tyres go brown
Tyre rubber contains antiozonants, which are additives that stop the rubber cracking as it flexes. Those additives migrate to the surface over time and oxidise, which is the brown film detailers call blooming or browning. A dressing applied over that film sits on contamination rather than rubber, so it looks patchy and sheds in the first wash.
A heavy duty cleaner like this one helps lift the film and old dressing together. The foam can pick up colour as it works, showing that contamination is being removed. Once the rubber has been thoroughly cleaned and rinsed, it is ready for a fresh dressing or tyre sealant.
Dilution and yield
Ratios are water to product. At 4:1 that is four parts water to one part concentrate, so a 3.8L bottle makes 19L of usable cleaner.
| Ratio | Strength | What for | Yield from 3.8L |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:1 | Extreme duty | Neglected tyres, heavy build up. Proceed with caution and test first | 7.6L |
| 2:1 | Heavy | Heavy tyre cleaning, engine bay and undercarriage degreasing | 11.4L |
| 4:1 | Maintenance | Maintenance tyre and wheel cleaning, engine bays, wheel wells, rubber and plastic mats | 19L |
How to use it
| 1. Cool the surface | Work out of direct sunlight on a cool tyre. Heat makes the product flash off before it has done anything.Rinse the wheel and tyre first if the car has just been driven. |
| 2. Spray liberally | Cover the whole sidewall. Tyres are thirsty, so do not be shy with coverage. |
| 3. Dwell about 30 seconds | Let the foam work. Do not let it dry on the surface. |
| 4. Agitate | Scrub with a stiff tyre brush. The foam should turn brown as the film and old dressing lift. |
| 5. Flush thoroughly | Rinse with plenty of water, including the wheel face and the arch. |
| 6. Repeat until the foam stays white | If the foam continues to turn brown, there is still contamination or old dressing being lifted. Neglected tyres may need two or three passes.Let the rubber dry before dressing. |
Order of work. Wheels and tyres come first in a wash, before the paint, so the dirtiest water and any overspray are rinsed away rather than dragged across clean panels. Dress the tyres last, once the rubber is dry.
